Local Government

The Town of Knightdale operates under a council/manager form of government in which the citizens elect at-large a mayor and a town council for overlapping four year terms as the Town's governing body. As the principal elected official of the Town, the Mayor provides leadership to the governing body and community, and presides over all council meetings. The council is charged with governing the Town and establishing Town policies.

The town manager is appointed by the mayor and the council, and serves as the Town's chief administrative officer. Two citizens boards help make recommendations to the town council based on their research and review of a variety of issues. These boards are Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Land Use Review Board which handles the combined duties of a typical Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, Tree Board and Community Appearance Board.

The Knightdale Town Council meets at 7:00 p.m. on the first Monday and the third Wednesday of the month at the Knightdale Town Hall. Land Use Review Board meetings are also held at Town Hall on the second Monday of each month at 7:00pm. The Parks & Recreation Advisory Board meets on an as needed basis. Wake County

Wake County is governed by a seven member Board of Commissioners, elected at large to serve four-year terms. Terms are staggered so that, every two years, three or four Commissioners are up for election. Following the November election, the Board takes office at its first meeting in December. At that time, a Chair and Vice Chair are elected for a one-year term each.

The Commissioners enact policies such as establishment of property tax rate, regulation of land use and zoning outside municipal jurisdictions, and adoption of the annual budget. Commissioners meet on the first and third Mondays of each month at 2:00 pm in Room 700 on the 7th floor of the Wake County Courthouse in downtown Raleigh.

The County Manager is appointed by the Board and is responsible for general administration of all County departments and agencies under the guidance of the Board of Commissioners and for maintaining effective relationships with semiautonomous and autonomous agencies. The County Manager implements Commissioner goals and policies, and advises the Commissioners on financial matters, services and other issues.
